Pirate
songs are a way to express the music, melody and events of
a pirate's life in days gone past. Back in the day, pirates
actually captured musicians and force them to play music aboard
the ships. The songs that the pirates loved most were the
ones that they could sing and dance to and of course, drink
to as well.
In fact,
on some pirate ships, pirate songs were played during an impending
battle in order to psyche out the crewmembers of the other
ship. When pirate songs were played in this fashion, it was
called "vapouring" the other side.

Bagpipers, drummers, fiddlers and trumpeters would play pirate
songs while approaching another ship in order to instill fear upon
the crew and would even play while the battle was taking place.
With this kind of precedent set, is it any wonder that the band
was playing as the Titanic was sinking?
Because sailing itself was hard and pirates spent much of the time
doing hard labor, when there was downtime pirates like to drink
rum, play pirate songs, dance and sing. In the Pirates of the Caribbean
theme song, the pirates sang, "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life
for me", which is a fictionalized example of what some pirates
may have sung after several days at sea.
